Birch
SCULPTURE | FALL 2011 I was inspired to work with birch bark for a project in sculpture class after spending a summer working at Songadeewin of Keewaydin camp in Vermont. Throughout the summer we had many campfires, including while out on week-long canoe trips. Birches can be found around the camp and in the Adirondacks; the bark from fallen trees is useful for starting fires because it is thin and will burn even if the wood is damp. I sewed pieces of birch bark together to create this fire-like sculpture. For the critique, I brought the class to a deserted lot and set a corner on fire. Everyone watched in silence.
