WATER THE BASICS
ECOLOGICAL DESIGN STUDIO | SPRING 2018 This exercise in spacial design focused on the UW’s Union Bay Natural Area (UBNA). In this scenario, 1,730,000 cubic feet of contaminated soil was identified within the site. My proposal suggests that the soil should be treated through phytoremediation on site instead of being removed. This would allow for easier manipulation of the land to hold 2 million gallons of additional stormwater from the surrounding neighborhoods that would be captured at UBNA in order to be cleaned, stored, and used to water the 1.5 acre UW Farm. This would account for all of the irrigation necessary to sustain the farm in the increasingly hot and dry summers that are becoming more and more frequent in the Pacific Northwest.
